Our German Chocolate Brownies are a riff on the classic cake recipe featuring moist and chewy brownies topped with a homemade Coconut Pecan Frosting. So yummy and so easy to make!

Ingredients

Fudge Brownies

  • 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 6 oz. Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar
  • 1/2 cup Butter (Sweet, Cream Salted)
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

German Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup Butter (We use Salted Sweet Cream Butter)
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar (packed)
  • 1 cup Evaporated Milk
  • 3 Egg Yolks
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 2 cups Shredded Coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups Chopped Pecans

Instructions

Fudge Brownies

  1. Add the flour, salt, and cocoa powder to a bowl.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients until combined and set aside.
  3. Give a rough chop to the semi-sweet chocolate bar.
  4. Place the chocolate pieces in a microwave-safe bowl along with the butter which should be cubed for easy melting.
  5. Place the bowl in the microwave for 20 seconds. Remove and stir.  Microwave for another 20 seconds.  Continue until the chocolate is nearly, but not completely melted.  This will help to make sure that the chocolate doesn't seize due to overheating.
  6. Stir the chocolate and butter mixture until the last of the chocolate pieces have melted and it is completely smooth.
  7. Add the sugars to the melted chocolate mixture.
  8. Stir with a spoon until completely combined.
  9. Add the eggs, one at a time. Stirring thoroughly after each egg is added.
  10. Add the vanilla extract and stir until combined.
  11. Add the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined.
  12. Line an 8x8" baking pan with parchment paper.
  13. Pour the brownie batter into the lined baking pan.
  14. Spread the brownie batter evenly in the baking pan.
  15. Bake the brownies in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 25-27 minutes.  Do not overbake.

German Chocolate Frosting

  1. Add the butter and brown sugar to a medium saucepan.
  2. Pour in the Evaporated Milk and the egg yolks.
  3. Turn on the heat to low.
  4. Stir the mixture continuously until the butter is fully melted, the brown sugar has completely dissolved and the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  5. Increase the heat to medium-low and bring the mixture to a low boil. When the bubbles begin to cover the surface of the caramel mixture stop stirring and set a timer for 5 minutes. Allow the mixture to cook without stirring.
  6. Turn off the heat, add the Vanilla, and stir until mixed.
  7. Add the shredded coconut and mix.
  8. Add the chopped pecans and mix.
  9. Allow the frosting to cool completely before you use it to top your dessert.
