Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Make the Angel Food Cake with a box cake mix. Follow the instructions on the box.
  2. Pour the angel food cake batter into an ungreased Angel Food Cake pan.
  3. Bake in a 350-degree oven until the top is golden brown and the cracks that form are dry to the touch.  For us, it is usually around 40 minutes.
  4. When you take the cake out of the oven, turn the pan upside onto a bottle or jar to cool.  Once fully cooled, take the cake out of the pan.
  5. Make a double batch of our light and creamy and delicious The Best Lemon Buttercream Frosting.  You can find detailed instructions and a video here.
  6. Place the Angel Food Cake on a cake plate.
  7. Angel Food cakes have a lot of crumbs, so you'll need to start with a light "crumb coat" layer of frosting.  Don't worry about how it looks, just get this first layer of frosting on the cake.
  8. Add a second, more generous, layer of lemon frosting.
  9. Use a piece of parchment paper to press down on the frosting to smooth out the frosting and get rid of the lines from the knife.
  10. You can stop here or add a couple more flourishes to up the wow factor.
  11. Use a Wilton 2D Decorating Tip to create a ring of frosting flowers around the top edge of the cake.
  12. Don't forget the sprinkles ... everything tastes better with sprinkles.
