Ingredients

  • 1 Box of Cake Mix (and all the ingredients to make the cake batter)
  • 1 batch of our The Best Buttercream Frosting
  • Wilton Frosting Tip #233
  • Wilton Color Right Blue Food Coloring
  • Oreo Cookies
  • Brown M&M's
  • Large/Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie

Instructions

  1. The key to these delicious cupcakes is our Best Buttercream Frosting recipe.   It is light and creamy and buttery and super delicious! You will find the recipe and directions here.  One batch of frosting should be enough to frost the cake.
  2. Tint the frosting red, we used 5 drops Blue Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to get this bright shade of blue.
  3. Make chocolate cake.  You can use a cake box mix, we have all the instructions you’ll need to make it taste just like homemade right hereStep 4:  We put a layer of frosting between the two layers of cake.
  4. Frost the rest of the cake.Step 6:  You will be adding the frosting "fur" next so you don't need a thick layer of frosting at this point. A normal crumb coat will be fine.
  5. You create the muppet fur by using a pastry bag filled with buttercream frosting and a Wilton Frosting Tip #233. This is the tip you would normally use to make a “grass” like texture on a cake.
  6. Add the Cookie Monster fur to the sides of the cake.
  7. Fill in the top of the cake with fur frosting.
  8. The Cookie Monster’s face is very easy to make.  Twist open an Oreo Cookie and use the side with the cream filling for the eyes.
  9. Press the Oreo cookies onto the top of the cake and then press a brown M&M into the oreo cookie filing to create Cookie's eyeball.  Remember to offset them so he has those crazy googly eyes.
  10. Use a sharp knife to cut a slit into the top of the cake.
  11. Place a large Chocolate Cookie into the slit on the top of the cake.  This is the Cookie Monster's mouth stuffed with cookies! We bought a jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie from the grocery store bakery but you could bake one yourself.
