Ingredients

  • 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 batch The Best Buttercream Frosting
  • Wilton #233 Frosting tip and decorating bag
  • Oreo Cookies
  • White Candy Melts
  • Orange Peanut M&M's
  • Black Icing

Instructions

  1. Make a batch of cupcakes.  You can use a cake box mix, we have all the instructions you’ll need to make them taste just like homemade right here. Or you can make them from scratch with our yummy Homemade Chocolate Cupcakes recipe.  We used chocolate cupcakes but Vanilla Cupcakes would taste great too.
  2. The key to these delicious cupcakes is our Best Buttercream Frosting recipe.   It is light and creamy and buttery and super delicious! You will find the recipe and directions here.  One batch of frosting will be enough to frost approximately 16 cupcakes.
  3. Tint the frosting red, we used 10 drops of Red and 4 drops of Crimson Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to get this bright shade of red.
  4. Make sure the cupcake has completely cooled.
  5. Next, apply a thin layer of Red Buttercream Frosting.
  6. Elmo's fur was created with Red Buttercream Frosting using a Wilton Frosting Tip #233.
  7. Fill the entire cupcake top with "Elmo Fur".
  8. Use Oreos for Elmo's mouth. You need to prepare the Oreo cookies before you start by opening them up and scraping out the filling.  Then you need to carefully cut the Oreo Cookie crisps in half.  We used a very sharp knife and carefully sawed them with the knife until they broke in half smoothly. The cookies break very easily, so go slowly.  Add the half piece of Oreo cookie as Elmo's smiling mouth.
  9. Then use an orange Peanut M&M candy for Elmo's nose.
  10. For Elmo's eyes, place two White Candy Melts eyes with the flat side of the melt facing up.
  11. And then use the Black Icing to create Elmo’s eyeballs in the middle of the White Candy Melts.
