Under the Sea M&M Fish Cookies
We love Frosted Sugar Cookies. I guess it is no surprise as they combine two of our best and most popular recipes. But when you add in a handful of M&M’s … cookie perfection! These Under the Sea M&M Fish Cookies are adorable, fun to make, and delicious to eat. Grab the kids, and some M&M’s, and let’s have some family baking fun.
How to Make the Sugar Cookies
Step 1: First, make a half batch of our The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe. We’ve tried a lot of sugar cookie recipes over the years and this one is definitely the best. The cookies rise but don’t lose their shape and they taste amazing. You can find the recipe and detailed instructions on how to make them right here.
Step 2: We used round cookie cutters to make the base of our M&M Fish Cookies. We have this extremely useful set of biscuit cookie cutters that we use for a lot of different types of cookies. If you don’t have something like this, you could use water glasses or coffee cups to cut out the round cookies.
Step 3: Cut out different size round cookies and you can have Mama and Daddy Fish and baby fish!
Step 4: Bake the cookies in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 6-7 minutes and then allow them to cool.
How to Make the Frosting
Step 5: Next, we made up a batch of our super yummy The Best Buttercream Frosting. You can find the recipe and directions here.
Step 6: We split the frosting into three equal parts, added food coloring, and made yellow (3 drops of yellow), blue (2 drops of blue), and green (2 drops of yellow and 1 drop of blue) frosting.
Putting It All Together
Step 7: Now you need M&M’s. You’ll need about 20 M&M’s for the scales for each cookie, and 2 reds for the fish lips. Use regular-sized M&M’s for the bigger cookies and M&M Minis for the little cookies.
Step 8: Frost the cookies with one of the colors.
Step 9: After frosting the cookies, you’re ready to create the Fish with the M&M’s. Start with a row of “fish scales” in the middle of the frosted cookie. Continue adding rows until you fill up half of the cookie with M&M fish scales.
Step 10: We used Wilton Candy Eyes for the fish eye but you could also use a mini marshmallow and a dot of black icing.
Step 11: Finally, add two red M&M’s for the fish lips. So cute and so very easy to make!
Step 12: Let your imagination be your guide on the color combinations for the Under the Sea M&M Fish Cookies. As you can see, each cookie was decorated with the same technique but turned out with a much different look. The kids will love this school of colorful (and delicious) M&M Fish Cookies. It is really fun to make these fun Sugar Cookies. (And nobody has to know easy it was to create them!)
