The Best Cranberry Buttercream Frosting

Cranberries and the Holidays go hand in hand so we created a new version of our classic The Best Buttercream Frosting that features this festive fruit. The tartness of Cranberries blend with the sweetness of the frosting into a creamy Holiday Buttercream that you don’t have to be a Cranberry lover to enjoy.
Our The Best Cranberry Buttercream Frosting gets its yummy cranberry flavor from classic Cranberry Sauce. We tried both Whole Berry and Jellied and got a better, richer Cranberry taste from the Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce.
Add the softened butter and cranberry sauce to the mixer.
Cream together on low speed they are completely combined.
Now add the powdered sugar a cup at a time. Continue to beat on medium speed until the frosting is creamy. This can be a “wet” frosting, if it is too thin, add 1/2 cup additional powdered sugar. Keep adding powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time until you have the frosting at the desired consistency. If the frosting is too thick/dry, add a bit of milk 1 tsp. at a time until you get the desired consistency.
If you want a bit more cranberry flavor, add a few tablespoons of chopped dried cranberries or fresh cranberries after you have the frosting the right consistency.
How much frosting will you need? That always depends on how thick or thin you apply the frosting or how much decorating you do but here are a couple of guidelines. Our recipe should make enough Best Cranberry Buttercream Frosting to cover a 9″ x 13″ sheet cake or a two-layer 8″ cake. If you are making cupcakes, you should be able to frost 24 cupcakes if you apply the frosting with a knife. If you swirl on the frosting with a pastry bag like we have done here, you should be able to frost 15-18 cupcakes depending on the size of the swirl.

Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) of Butter (Softened)
- 5 Cups of Powdered Sugar
- 3/4 cup Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce
- 6-8 Fresh or Dried Cranberries (diced)
- Decorating Bags
- Wilton 2D Decorating Tip
- Mixer
Instructions
- In a mixer, cream together the Butter and Cranberry Sauce.
- Add powdered sugar on low speed until the powdered sugar and butter is completely combined.
- Continue to beat on medium speed until the frosting is creamy.
- This is a "wet" frosting, if it too thin, add 1/2 cup additional powdered sugar. Keep adding powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time until you get until you have the frosting at the desired consistency.
- Finally gently fold in the 6-8 diced Cranberries with a spoon.
