Star Wars BB-8 Popcorn
Surprise that Star Wars fan in your life with a batch of our Star Wars BB-8 Popcorn – sweet, salty and delicious and so very easy to make!
I love all things Star Wars. Nancy isn’t as big of fan. I have had to explain to her multiple times the difference between R2-D2 and C-3PO. I am starting to suspect she does says these things to get under my skin. Younger sisters!! Anyway … we wanted to celebrate the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in our own way with a special Star Wars BB-8 Popcorn.
First make some popcorn. We make ours on the stove. Pour 2 Tbsp. (or so – depending on how big of a pan you use) of oil in the bottom of a medium/large pan. The oil should generously cover the bottom of the pan. Heat the pan over Medium/High heat. Put 3 test popcorn kernels in the pan. After test kernels pop, add 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels to the pan. Take the pan off heat when the sound of kernels popping slows down. Couldn’t be easier. And popcorn cooked this way tastes so much better than popcorn from the microwave. You will have approximately 10 cups of popcorn.
Once you have the popcorn made, salt it liberally. It is so nice to taste the salty with the sweet marshmallow coating. Not quite like Kettle Corn but close.
Now make the marshmallow mixture. Melt 1/4 cup of butter in a medium sauce pan. Once the butter is melted add 2 1/2 cups of mini marshmallows. (Save the other 1/2 cup of Marshmallows to sprinkled in the finished Star Wars BB-8 Popcorn.) Stir until the marshmallows are melted. Turn off the heat. If you like you can add 1 tsp. of vanilla to the melted marshmallow mixture.
Slowly pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn. Gently fold the marshmallow mixture in with the popcorn until the popcorn is mostly covered. The amount of marshmallow mixture you want to add is really up to your own taste. The more you add, the stickier the popcorn will be so we suggest that you add it a bit at a time, stir the popcorn and give it a taste before you add more. Leave a little bit of the marshmallow mixture for the next step.
Now pour the popcorn onto a cookie sheet covered with foil or a silpat liner. Drizzle a little bit of the remaining marshmallow mixture over the popcorn but do not mix it up. You will need the mixture at the top so the candy will have something to stick to.
Once the popcorn is covered in marshmallow mixture it is time to add the candy. You want the marshmallow mixture to still be warm and sticky but not so hot that the candy melts. Sprinkle the candy onto the popcorn, concentrating on the areas with the most drizzled marshmallow mixture. We added Orange Mini M&M’s and Orange Pretzel M&M’s. Then we added Orange and Grey Regular M&M’s. (You can find the Grey M&M’s at Candy Stores and Party City.) We also threw in the remaining 1/2 cup of mini marshmallows. Allow the popcorn to cool. Break apart into pieces and serve.
Our family loves this popcorn so it has never lasted longer than a day at our house. This popcorn definitely tastes best right after it is made but will keep for a few days in an airtight container. The popcorn is a little chewier the next day because the popcorn absorbs some of the moisture from the marshmallow mixture but it still tastes good.
This is a fun version of our Popcorn series and perfect for a Star Wars Party, a movie watching party or as a fun snack for the Star Wars lover in your family.
