Ingredients You Will Need
Frosting: Our delicious and easy-to-make The Best Buttercream Frosting is the “secret” ingredient for each and every one of our 4th of July Cupcake ideas. Creamy and delicious, this really is the best buttercream we have ever tasted. You’ll find the recipe and detailed instructions right here.
Food Coloring to Tint the Frosting: A couple of the recipes below call for tinted Buttercream Frosting. Easy Peasy. We use Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. It is a concentrated food coloring that allows you to easily get pretty, vivid colors without having to use a ton of food coloring. For the Red frosting, we added 4 drops of Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to the frosting. We made this pretty blue color by combining 4 drops of blue with a very tiny drop of Pink and an even tinier drop of Red Wilton Color Right Food Coloring.
Cake Mix: Any Cake Mix will do but we like Pillsbury Super Moist White Cake Mix. We made the batter according to the directions on the back of the box. To make sure we got a pretty white batter we used the instructions for making the batter with egg whites only.
Food Coloring to Tint the Cake Mix: To color the cake batter red and blue. We used Wilton Color Right Food Coloring in the following combinations: Red batter = 5 drops of Crimson food coloring and Blue batter = 3 drops of Blue and 1 drop of Red food coloring.
Sprinkles: Don’t forget the sprinkles. Red, White, and Blue Jimmies are always good in a pinch.
Cupcake Pan/Cupcake Liners: You’ll need a cupcake tin and cupcake liners.
Red White and Blue Cupcakes
Double down on the patriotic spirit with these unique and delicious two-tone Red White and Blue Cupcakes that feature our to-die-for Buttercream Frosting not just on the top, but in the middle of the cupcake too!
These fun cupcakes start with a regular White Cake Mix. Make the cake batter according to the directions on the box. Split the batter into two equal portions and color one red and one blue. Bake the cupcakes according to the directions on the box. Allow them to cool. When you are ready to frost them, carefully remove the cupcake liners and slice off the top third of each cupcake with a serrated knife. Try to make the cut in the same place on all of the cupcakes. Using a round decorating tip, add a circle of The Best Buttercream Frosting around the edge of the bottom of a red cupcake. Press the top of a blue cupcake onto the frosting. Using a 2D Decorating Tip, add a swirl of frosting to the top of the Red White and Blue Cupcake and finish off with some 4th of July sprinkles. So pretty and patriotic!
Red White and Blue Cupcake in Jar
These Red White and Blue Cupcakes in a Jar are perfect for a 4th of July or Memorial Day Party, Picnic, or BBQ because not only did they taste delicious but they are a unique take on cupcakes and very easy to make. Your friends will be very impressed!
Start with a White Cake Box Mix. Make the batter according to the directions on the box. Divide the cake batter into two portions and tint one red and the other blue. Pour the batter into cupcake liners in a cupcake pan and bake according to the directions on the box. Allow the Red and Blue Cupcakes to thoroughly cool. To transform the cupcakes into Cupcakes in a Jar, we used one pint Mason Jars. You can get them everywhere now … craft stores, grocery stores, big box stores. We got these a Walmart. We like them because they don’t have a lot of writing on them. Start by adding a layer of crumbled red cupcake pieces on the bottom of the Mason Jar. Then add a layer of the best buttercream frosting. We used a Wilson 2D decorating tip to get a little swirl in the frosting. You don’t need to completely cover the whole layer of cake. A circle of frosting around the edge of the jar is fine. Add a layer of blue cupcake pieces and then for the final layer of frosting, add a little swirl. Easy peasy!
