Easy Homemade Guacamole
This is the homemade Guacamole recipe we have been using all of our lives – super easy to make and so delicious with its use of simple fresh ingredients to enhance the flavor of the avocados. Delish!
Guacamole is a staple in our family, almost its own food group. When we were growing up our Grandparents had a ginormous Avocado tree in their backyard. It was great for climbing, secret forts, and tons of Avocados. Some years there would be hundreds of avocados on that tree. So we ate a lot of avocados while we were growing up … mostly in the form of Guacamole. This is our tried and true homemade Guacamole recipe. Easy to make and super delicious. We hope your family enjoys it as much as our family does!
What Type of Avocados should you use?
Step 1: We suggest Hass Avocados if you can find ripe ones in your grocery store. Otherwise, you can use whatever type you can find.
The avocados should be soft to the touch but NOT TOO soft. If there is no give, they are not ripe, you won’t be able to mash them and they will have no taste. If they are too smushy, they are over-ripe and will likely have a lot of brown spots inside and brown guacamole is not appetizing or tasty.
Two Sisters Tip: To get the pit out, bring the knife down into the pit and then use it to pop the pit out. So easy.
How to Make Homemade Guacamole
Step 2: Cut the avocados in half, lengthwise, and remove the pit. Use a knife to score the inside of the avocado. Use a spoon to scoop the avocado pieces out of the skins.
Step 3: Place the avocado pieces in a bowl and mash them with a fork. We like our guacamole to be a little chunky so we don’t mash them up all that much.
Step 4: Add the Garlic Salt and the Chopped Red Onion and mix.
Step 5: Sprinkle the guacamole with the lemon juice and mix. (The lemon juice will help keep the avocado from browning too quickly.) Finally, add some Salsa or our Homemade Pico de Gallo to taste. This is an important step as the Salsa will add some color, some flavor and some heat.
How to Store/Serve
Guacamole will start to turn brown pretty quickly. It is really best served immediately after making it. The lemon juice that we add will help a bit but after a few hours, the oxidation will start to happen.
If you must make it ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator one of two ways:
- Covered with plastic wrap so that the wrap is sitting right on top of the guacamole.
- Cover the guacamole with a thin layer of water. Pour the water off before you serve it. You might have to stir it up a bit too.
