They are the perfect blend of rich cocoa sweetness and indulgent coconut and pecans. Inspired by the classic cake recipe, this yummy dessert features the same delicious flavors as its cake namesake but is so much easier to make. Moist and chewy brownies are topped with a homemade German Chocolate frosting that is a delectable combination of nutty pecans, shredded coconut, and buttery caramel flavor.  These brownies will have everyone asking for seconds.  We hope your family enjoys them as much as our family did!

Ingredients You Will Need

All the ingredients you will need to make the German Chocolate Brownies including Coconut Pecan Frosting, eggs, butter, semi-sweet chocolate baking bar, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cocoa powder and flour.

How to Make the Brownies

Step 1: Make a batch of Homemade Fudge Brownies.  We have a yummy recipe and you can find the detailed instructions on how to make the brownies right here.  Add the dry ingredients to a bowl and whisk them together and set the bowl aside.  Give the Semi-Sweet Chocolate bar a rough chop and melt the chocolate and the butter in the microwave.  Add the sugars to the melted chocolate and then add the eggs, one at a time.  Add the vanilla and mix. And then add in the dry ingredients.  Line an 8×8″ baking pan with parchment paper and pour the brownie batter into the lined baking pan.
Step 2: Bake the brownies in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 25-27 minutes.  Do not overbake.  Allow the brownies to fully cool before you frost them.

How to Make the Coconut Pecan Frosting

Step 3: While the brownies are cooling, make a batch of our German Chocolate Cake Frosting (better known as Coconut Pecan Frosting.) You will find detailed instructions and step-by-step instructions photos of how to make the frosting right here.  Add the butter, brown sugar, and egg. yolks, and evaporated milk to a medium saucepan with the heat set at low. Stir continuously until the butter is melted and the mixture is thoroughly incorporated. Increase the heat to medium-low and bring the mixture to a low boil.  When there are bubbles over the surface of the caramel mixture, stop stirring and cook for 5 minutes.  Take the pan off the heat, add the vanilla, and mix.  Then add the shredded coconut and mix. Finally, add the chopped pecans and mix.  Allow the frosting to cool before you frost the brownies.

Putting It Altogether

Step 4: Frost the brownies with the batch of cooled German Chocolate Frosting.
Step 5: Remove the brownies from the pan using the parchment paper to lift them out.  Cut the brownies into 9 individual pieces. Enjoy!

Fudge Brownies

  • 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 6 oz. Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar
  • 1/2 cup Butter (Sweet, Cream Salted)
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

German Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup Butter (We use Salted Sweet Cream Butter)
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar (packed)
  • 1 cup Evaporated Milk
  • 3 Egg Yolks
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 2 cups Shredded Coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups Chopped Pecans

Instructions

Fudge Brownies

  1. Add the flour, salt, and cocoa powder to a bowl.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients until combined and set aside.
  3. Give a rough chop to the semi-sweet chocolate bar.
  4. Place the chocolate pieces in a microwave-safe bowl along with the butter which should be cubed for easy melting.
  5. Place the bowl in the microwave for 20 seconds. Remove and stir.  Microwave for another 20 seconds.  Continue until the chocolate is nearly, but not completely melted.  This will help to make sure that the chocolate doesn't seize due to overheating.
  6. Stir the chocolate and butter mixture until the last of the chocolate pieces have melted and it is completely smooth.
  7. Add the sugars to the melted chocolate mixture.
  8. Stir with a spoon until completely combined.
  9. Add the eggs, one at a time. Stirring thoroughly after each egg is added.
  10. Add the vanilla extract and stir until combined.
  11. Add the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined.
  12. Line an 8x8" baking pan with parchment paper.
  13. Pour the brownie batter into the lined baking pan.
  14. Spread the brownie batter evenly in the baking pan.
  15. Bake the brownies in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 25-27 minutes.  Do not overbake.

German Chocolate Frosting

  1. Add the butter and brown sugar to a medium saucepan.
  2. Pour in the Evaporated Milk and the egg yolks.
  3. Turn on the heat to low.
  4. Stir the mixture continuously until the butter is fully melted, the brown sugar has completely dissolved and the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  5. Increase the heat to medium-low and bring the mixture to a low boil. When the bubbles begin to cover the surface of the caramel mixture stop stirring and set a timer for 5 minutes. Allow the mixture to cook without stirring.
  6. Turn off the heat, add the Vanilla, and stir until mixed.
  7. Add the shredded coconut and mix.
  8. Add the chopped pecans and mix.
  9. Allow the frosting to cool completely before you use it to top your dessert.
