French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup Icing
This French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup Icing features the same great taste of French Toast but in the convenient form of a casserole which makes it perfect for a family or Holiday breakfast.
We love everything about French Toast. How easy it is to make. How yummy it tastes. How versatile it is. It is our go-to weekend breakfast treat. And we hate to admit it … but sometimes we even have it for dinner. This delicious French Toast Casserole with Maple Syrup Icing takes everything we love about French Toast and wraps it up in one easy to make a breakfast casserole. This is the recipe we find ourselves using again and again for a holiday breakfast or just a random Sunday morning and we hope you enjoy it as much as our family does.
Ingredients you will need
- French Bread: We use the fresh French Bread loaves that you can buy in the bakery at our local Grocery Store. But you can use your favorite bread – sourdough, challah, or ciabatta – would all work well.
- Eggs: You will need eight Large Size eggs for this recipe.
- Milk: to mix with the eggs.
- Whipping Cream: You can use all Milk, but if you want a casserole that is a little bit more rich and creamy, use Heavy Whipping Cream too.
- Butter: We use Sweet Cream Salted Butter in our baking recipes.
- Sugars: you will need three different sugars (Granulated, Brown, and Powdered) for this recipe.
- Cinnamon: for flavor.
- Vanilla: for more flavor.
- Maple Syrup: as a topping for the casserole or for the optional, by why would you not make it, Maple Syrup Icing.

How to Make the Breakfast Casserole
- Add the eggs to a large mixing bowl and whisk together.
- Add the Granulated Sugar, Vanilla, and Cinnamon to the bowl. Mix until combined.
- Add the Milk and Whipping Cream and continue to whisk together.
- Set the egg mixture aside.
- Cut the French Bread loaf into equal-sized pieces.
- Add the bread to a bowl.
- Pour in the egg mixture and mix until the bread pieces are completely covered.
- Allow the bread to soak in the egg mixture for approximately 10 minutes.
- In a small bowl, add the cold butter, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Mix with a Pastry Cutter or a fork until the dry ingredients are combined with the butter for the streusel topping.
- Prepare a 9×13″ baking dish with baking spray.
- Pour the bread mixture into the baking dish and then sprinkle the streusel over the top of the bread. Bake in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes.
- While the casserole is in the oven, make the Maple Syrup Icing. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in the microwave. Add 2 cups of powdered sugar and stir until mixed. Add 2 teaspoons of maple syrup.
- Then add some milk, 1 tablespoon at a time until the icing is the right consistency.
- If you feel like the icing needs a little bit more maple syrup flavoring, replace some of the milk with more Maple Syrup.
- Drizzle the icing on the French Toast Casserole right before you serve it.
