Ingredients you will need
- Bread: For a perfect bite-sized appetizer, we like to use the Freshly-Baked French Bread Baguettes from the Bakery section in the grocery store.
- Tomatoes: The better the tomatoes, the better the Italian Bruschetta. We use nice and ripe On-the-Vine Roma Tomatoes.
- Cheese: Classic Bruschetta tastes best with freshly grated Parmesan Cheese. But in a pinch, you could use some from pre-grated packages that you can find in the cheese section of the grocery store.
- Basil: You really are going to want Fresh Basil for this recipe, dried is just not going to taste as good.
How to Prepare the French Bread Toast
Step 1: Slice the French Bread and arrange it in a single layer on a cookie sheet.
Step 2: Cut a garlic clove in half and rub the cut side on each piece of bread.
Step 3: Use a Pastry Brush to lightly cover each bread slice with a tiny bit of olive oil.
Step 4: Put the bread under the broiler or in the Toaster Oven set to toast for a few minutes. Watch it carefully. You don’t want to burn the toast.
How to Make the Tomato, Garlic, and Basil Topping
Step 5: Cut and deseed the tomatoes and then dice them into small pieces Add the tomatoes to a medium-sized bowl. Don’t skip the deseeding step or the topping will be too wet.
Step 6: Chop the basil and add to the tomatoes. Then add the Parmesan cheese. Drizzle in the remaining olive oil and carefully mix together.
Step 7: Remove the lightly toasted French Bread from the oven and scoop the tomato mixture onto the bread. Top the Bruschetta with salt and pepper and serve.
Expert Tips and FAQ’s
Bruschetta is both things actually. Technically it is a piece of toast with some kind of a savory topping. The tomato, basil, and garlic topping we’ve used in our recipe is the classic topping that most people associate with the word Bruschetta.
Ideally, the toast should be hot and the tomato mixture should be room temperature. But the topping tastes just fine right out of the refrigerator too.
The fresher it is the better it is going to taste. Bruschetta will definitely taste best on the day you make it. But if have some left-over tomato and basil topping, you could store it in an air-tight container for up to 2-3 days.
