Disney Frozen Elsa Crowns
After we had decided to make Elsa Capes for all the girls at our Frozen Birthday Party, Laurie started talking about making matching wands too. I told her that Elsa didn’t have a wand. We argued over that point for a while. When she finally conceded she had only seen the movie up to the Let It Go scene, I suggested making crowns for the girls. All’s well that ends well … Laurie finally watched Frozen all the way through, we made these DIY Frozen Elsa Crowns, the girls at the party loved them and everyone lived happily ever after!!
How to Make DIY Frozen Elsa Crowns
You will need:
- White plastic headbands
- Blue Felt
- Foam Sheet
- Tacky Glue
- Hot Glue Gun
- Blue Glitter
- Large Plastic Rhinestones
- Silver Wrapping Paper
- Oatmeal Container
The first thing we did was draw a pattern for the felt part of the Frozen Elsa Crowns – a front, back and insert. Using the curve of the white plastic headband as a guide for the bottom edge of the pattern Laurie hand-drew a shape for the crown that was reminiscent of Elsa’s crown. For the front pattern, we added a tab at the bottom of the pattern that we used to attach the main crown piece to the headband. The back pattern was an exact copy of the crown shape in the front pattern. The Pattern Insert was a similar shape but slightly reduced.
For each crown, you need a front piece in felt, a back piece in felt, an insert piece in thin foam sheet and a white head band. We used the same blue felt that we used in our Elsa Party Favor Bags.
You can see in this picture how the shape of the bottom edge of the front piece of felt matches the curve of the white plastic head band.
Wrap the tab around the inside of the headband and attach with a hot glue gun.
Continue with the hot glue gun and attach all sides of the tab to both the headband and the inside of the crown.
Now attach the foam crown insert to the back of the crown felt. This insert will ensure that the crown will stand up straight and not flop over while it is being worn.
Use your glue gun to cover the foam insert with the crown back piece of felt.
Here is the crown after all the pieces have been attached to the plastic headband. Now it needs a little bit of embellishment!
We used blue glitter, Elmer’s glue and large plastic rhinestones to embellish the DIY Frozen Elsa Crowns.
With Elmer’s Glue, we applied a bead of glue all the way around the edges of the crown.
Cover the glue with a liberal amount of glitter. Let it dry for a few minutes.
The excess glitter will easily come off the felt. We tapped most of it off and used a small paint brush to remove any glitter stragglers.
We glued on a large snowflake rhinestone to the center of the Frozen Elsa Crown.
Finally, we added a circle of glitter around the rhinestone.
Here is Queen Elsa’s crown.
And here are our Frozen Elsa Crowns. Not an exact match but they were a perfect match with our blue and white Frozen Party Decorations and our Elsa Party Favor Bags.
We made crowns for all the girls at our Frozen Party (and all the Moms!) They were a big hit. We covered an oatmeal box in silver wrapping paper and used that as a stand by the front door. Every female guest got a crown as they entered the party!
The girls wore the crowns throughout the party (along with their Elsa Capes!) and love them. This is an easy party craft that has a big impact!
