Disney Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers
We found the idea for these DIY Ruffled Streamers (which we then turned into a Frozen Party Backdrop) when we were looking for ideas for Allison’s Under the Sea party. We didn’t want to give up this idea once we switched to a Frozen Party. We’re glad we kept it. They were super inexpensive to make and the finished Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers made a strong statement behind out dessert table.
How to Make Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers
You will need:
I think this party decoration project was the least expensive decoration that we created for our Frozen Birthday Party. We found these crepe paper streamers at Hobby Lobby for $1.59 each and four packages made enough Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers to cover a 7 x 10 foot window area behind our Frozen Party Dessert Table.
The first thing I did was cut the crepe paper strips into 9 feet strips. The ruffling process will shrink the length a bit so keep that in mind when you are deciding how long to cut each strip.
Next, you will need a sewing machine. Change your settings on your machine to create a long stitch with as much tension as possible. I changed my stitch length to 5.0 which is what I use for gathering and then I cranked up the tension wheel to 9.
Each gathered Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers is made from three pieces of crepe paper streamer. In the picture above, there are two white crepe paper strips barely overlapping for the back layer. And then I added a blue crepe paper strip over the middle of the two white strips. I placed two pieces of painters tape on the edge of the sewing table so that I would have a guide to keep the crepe paper streamer even without having to use pins to keep the three pieces straight and even.
The next step is fast and easy. Just make a straight seam down the center of the DIY Ruffled Streamer. The increased tension on the machine will cause the streamer to automatically ruffle up as you sew.
The Frozen DIY Ruffled Streamers turned out so pretty. I made a bunch of different combinations of the blue and white crepe paper streamers so there would be some variety in the backdrop we made with the ruffled streamers.
Color combinations:
- 2 whites in the back – 1 blue in the front middle
- 2 blues in the back – 1 white in the front middle
- 2 whites in the back – 1 white in the front middle
- 2 blues in the back – 1 blue in the front middle
- 2 blues in the back – 1 blue in the front middle
The Ruffled Streamers are also re-useable and roll up nicely for storage.
I pinned the ruffled streamers to an all white ruffled streamer to make the party backdrop.
Here you can see the front side of the backdrop, with the individual streamers pinned and ready for sewing.
Then I sewed across the top of the backdrop. I made two passes across the top to make sure everything was attached.
