Dinosaur Party Favor Bags
My favorite part of planning my niece’s birthday parties is figuring out what kind of favor bag I am going to make. The Frozen Party Favor Bags we made last year were such a hit I knew I was going to have to bring my “A” game. I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do when Allison told us she wanted a dinosaur party, but I ended up doing what I did for her Halloween costume on a much smaller scale. The Dinosaur Party Favor Bags turned out so cute, and all the kids loved them.
How to Make Dinosaur Party Favor Bags
You will need:
- Felt Sheets
- Thread
- Sewing Machine
- Scissors
- Glue
- Puffy Paint
I made these Dinosaur Party Favor Bags entirely with Felt Sheets which makes it a very inexpensive project. You can find them in craft stores and they cost anywhere from .25 to .33 a piece. Each bag will take four sheets (3 for the bag, 1 for the underbelly and the spikes) and part of a fifth sheet for the bag straps.
Using a single felt sheet, cut out a piece in the shape of a trapezoid for the tail. Using a coordinating color, cut out some triangle spikes. I made a triangle template that was big enough so there would be three spikes down the back of the bag and three on the tail. Place the triangle spikes on on of the long angled sides of the trapezoid piece of felt. Fold the felt over and pin the angled sides together. Using the sewing machine, make a seam down the long angled edge and across the short edge. Trim any excess material from the seams.
Turn the tail right side out and you have the dinosaur tail with the spikes standing up.
For the back piece of the Dinosaur Party Favor Bag, first cut one of the felt sheet in half. Place the Dinosaur Tail at the bottom and the three other spikes along the remaining area of the edge. Place the second half of felt on top of the dinosaur tail and spikes and pin together. Sew a seam as close to the edge as you can get it. Trim any extra material on the seam.
Open it up and you have the back of the Dinosaur Party Favor Bag created!
Now sew the handles onto each side of the bags. The back of the bag is the one with the tail and the spikes and the front of the bag is a single felt sheet. Sew the edges of the straps to each side of the bag as shown in the pictures above. I used a fancy embroidery stitch to attach the handles.
Now you need to sew the front side of the bag to the back side. The back is going to be slightly smaller than the front because of the seam you made. With the right sides together, just match up one corner and then trim after you sew up the bottom and two sides.
Turn the bag right side out and you are done with the sewing part of the project.
For the front, I cut out an oval in the same color felt as the spikes and glued it to the front to represent the underbelly of the dinosaur.
Then I used Puffy Paint to add the name of each child who would be attending the birthday party.
The color theme for our Dinosaur Party was Purple, Blue and White so those are the colors of felt we used but these Dinosaur Party Favor bags would look great in any color combination, including a more realistic green and brown. We loved how these turned out and so did the kids! Another Two Sisters Crafting Party Favor Bag success!
