We are big fans of creating a dessert table for a party.  It is always a showstopper.  What could be better than a party decoration that is also chock full of yummy treats and desserts. But we’ve found it is not a practical solution for the Holidays. With the other Christmas decorations, the tree and all the presents we usually don’t have room to dedicate a “table” to the desserts so for the last few years we have been building a Christmas Dessert Board instead. We “borrowed” the idea from the French charcuterie board and it has been a big hit. We load the board up with a sampling all the Christmas treats we made that year, fill in with Christmas candy and let the Christmas fun begin!

Who wants to build a Christmas Charcuterie Board?

Here is our Christmas Dessert Board. So pretty and colorful and chocked full of yummy Christmas Desserts and Treats.  Sweet and Salty.  Chocolate and Vanilla.  Crunchy Toffee and Fluffy Marshmallows.  There is literally something for every one of our Christmas party guests.  Charcuterie (shaar·koo·tr·ee) boards are usually made with cheeses and salami but cookies and candies work fine too!

Picking the right serving platter/board

The first step is picking the right display for your Holiday treats. We use a big cutting board that we bought from Amazon.  But you can also use a large platter.  Or you can make a DIY version using a cardboard box – just cut it down to size and wrap it with Christmas Wrapping paper.  Easy peasy!

Don’t forget the Christmas Candy

Christmas Candy is the perfect filler for your Christmas Dessert Board.  We used it extensively to fill in around the outside of the board and in the blank spaces between the different cookies and other treats.  For our family, the must have candies are Candy Canes and Christmas M&M’s.  But here is the list of the other store-bought candies that we used:

  • Candy Canes
  • Christmas Peeps
  • Christmas M&M’s
  • Christmas Hershey’s Kisses
  • Peppermint Butter Mints
  • Christmas Gummy Bears
  • Christmas Cadbury Chocolates
  • Christmas Gum Drops

Tips and Tricks for your Christmas Dessert Board

With a couple of year’s experience under our belts, here are a few tips and tricks for building the perfect Christmas Dessert board:

  • Less is more. We only put a handful of each Christmas treat out on the board – 5 or 6 of each thing is plenty. Then throughout the day we will replenish the board as people eat the various desserts.
  • Bite-sized is the right size. For Christmas we like to make our treats on the small-ish side. That way people can a bunch of the different Christmas desserts and not feel like that are over-indulging.
  • Variety is the spice of life.  We try to have a big variety of holiday treats on our board.  Throw in something salty – like nuts and pretzels.  Marshmallows are a good way to mix things up. And remember, everybody loves Rice Krispie Treats.  You don’t have to just make cookies for Christmas!
  • Mix up the colors.  When we are arranging the desserts on the board, we try not to put things that are the same color next to each other. By alternating the colors on the board you help each individual dessert pop out and shine on its own.
  • Candy is your friend. Use the store-bought candy as filler.  It is great along the outside of  your board and in the nooks and crannies between the different desserts.
