Catapillar Cake

When my nephew asked me to make him a special cake for his 4th birthday, I had a lot of great ideas, but my daughter was 5 weeks old, and I was having trouble making coffee in the morning.  I ended up buying him a “special” cake at Costco.  I regret not being able to do more, but working full time and taking care of a newborn was about all I could focus on.  For my nephew’s 5th birthday, my daughter was 13 months old, so I wasn’t as overwhelmed as I was the year before.   I saw a picture of this Catapillar Cake in Parents magazine and knew this would be the new “special” cake.

How to Make a Caterpillar Cake:

Project Supplies:

  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • Bundt Pan
  • Buttercream Frosting
  • #47 Frosting Tip
  • #3 Frosting Tip
  • Green M&M’s
  • Blue M&M’s
  • Brown M&M’s
  • Large Marshmallow
  • Pepperidge Farm Pirouette cookies

Caterpillar Cake Body

It seemed pretty easy.  I cooked a chocolate cake in a Bundt pan.  Once cooled, I cut the cake in half and made the cake into an S shape.  I then frosted it with green buttercream frosting.  I used a 47 tip for the thicker yellow stripe and a 3 tip for the smaller dark green stripe.  I used green M&Ms along the base of the caterpillar, which was a great way to hide any bottom imperfections.

Caterpillar Cake Face

For the face, I used a large marshmallow for the eyes, with a blue M&M for the eyeball. I used some of the frosting to glue the eyeball onto the marshmallow.  A brown M&M was the mouth and Pepperidge Farm Pirouette cookies were the antennas with green M&Ms glued (with frosting) to the top.   I really liked the way it turned out.  It was also a pretty easy cake to make.
