Butter cookies are yummy no matter what form they take. But for whatever reason, in our minds, they are a cookie that we only make at Christmastime.  These Candy Cane Cookies are the most Christmas-y of all of our holiday Butter Cookies.  Red and White strands of peppermint infused dough are twisted together to form Candy Canes.  Fun and yummy and a great option to leave out for Santa. It is a Christmas win/win/win.

To make the cookie dough you need to add softened butter to a mixing bowl and then mix the butter until it is soft and creamy. Add the Powdered Sugar and then cream the sugar and butter until it is light and fluffy (at least 2-3 minutes.) Next, add in the egg, vanilla, and peppermint extract and beat. Finally, add in the flour and the salt and mix just until combined.

Divide the dough into two equal portions and color one portion red and leave the other portion white.  We used Wilton Color Right Food Coloring and added 2 drops of Crimson and 2 drops of Red to tint the dough this pretty Christmas Red color.

How to Make the Candy Cane Shaped Cookies

Directions on how to prepare and twist the cookie dough into the shape of a candy cane.

For each candy cane, we used a Food Scale to measure a .8 oz portion of each color of cookie dough.  We rolled these pieces of cookie dough into 6″ ropes.  Then we twisted the ropes around each other and shaped them into a candy cane shape. Easy peasy.

Baking Instructions

Place the candy cane cookies on a prepared cookie sheet and then bake them in an oven pre-heated to 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  Cool the cookies on a cooling rack.  They are butter cookies so they are delicate.  You’ll have to be careful moving the hot cookies onto the rack so they don’t break.
