How to Make the Marshmallow Mixture

Collage image showing the steps for melting the marshmallows and adding the cake batter flavor.

Step 1: Melt the butter in a large saucepan on medium-low heat.
Step 2: Add the Mini Marshmallows to the melted butter and stir them so they are completely covered in the melted butter. Stir continuously until the marshmallows are completely melted and then take the pan off the heat.

Note about the cake mix:  If you are worried about eating the raw flour in the cake mix you can bake the cake mix in a low oven for 15 minutes.  Also, you will be adding the cake mix to a very hot mixture of melted marshmallows and butter so it will get slightly cooked during that process.

Step 3: Add the heat-treated Cake Mix to the Marshmallow mixture.
Step 4:  Stir the marshmallow mixture until the cake mix is completely combined with the marshmallow mixture.

Adding the Rice Krispies Cereal

Step 6: Fold together until the cereal is completely covered in the cake batter marshmallow mixture.
Step 7: Add the sprinkles and fold until combined.

Assembly Instructions

Step 8: Spoon the mixture into a 9×13″ pan. We add a piece of parchment paper to the pan so it will be easier to remove the treats when they are cooled.
Step 9: Lightly press the mixture into the pan and let the treats cool. If you’d like, add more sprinkles to the top of the treats.
Steps 10-11: Use the parchment paper to remove the treats from the pan and then cut them into individual servings.

Storing/Serving Instructions

Rice Krispie Treats will last 2-3 days at room temperature in an air-tight container before they start to get stale.  You can extend that timeline a few days if you store them in the refrigerator and then take them out about 30 minutes before you eat them.  They freeze up great though and that is what we do if we want to make these ahead of time for a party or a family gathering.  They defrost very quickly and taste great once they are defrosted.  You can keep them in the freezer for up to a couple of months.
