When we were kids our mom used to make Baked Apples all the time.  A bowl of warm apples topped with a dollop of whipped cream was a go-to dessert in our house during Apple season.  We also had them on a piece of angel food cake or on a scoop of vanilla ice cream.  So yummy.  And boy do these Cinnamon Apples smell good while they are cooking too.  If you are looking for a dessert that is also kind of like a warm hug for your family, this recipe is the ticket.

Preparing the Apples

Step 1: What are the best apples for Baked Apples?  We use good old Granny Smith apples.  We like a little tartness with our cinnamon and sugar.  Here is a good list of all the various types of apples.
Step 2: Wash, peel, and slice the apples. The more uniform your apple slices, the more uniform they will cook so we used our apple slicer.
Step 3: Pat the apples dry with a paper towel.
Step 4: Toss the apple slices with the juice of 1/2 a lemon to keep the oxidation down and add a little brightness to the recipe.

Step 5: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, allspice, and cornstarch until combined.
Step 6: Pour the sugar mixture in with the apple slices and toss.
Step 7: Drizzle in the vanilla and continue to toss until they are completely coated with the sugar mixture and then pour the slices into a shallow baking dish. We used a ceramic pie plate.

Baking the Apples

Step 8: Cover the apples with a few pads of butter.
Step 9: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in an oven that has been preheated to 350 degrees. Every 15 minutes we pulled the apples out of the oven and stirred them up to make sure they were completely covered with this yummy Cinnamon and Sugar syrup. After 45 minutes, check the apples.  Our Baked Apples were still a little underdone so we baked them for an additional 15 minutes without the aluminum foil cover.  Check frequently until the apple slices are cooked to your taste.  We like ours cooked through but not too mushy.  For us, that was after a total of 60 minutes in the oven.
